Owen is a sensitive, fun, thoughtful, straightforward boy. He is inherently a rule follower and a thinker. He is quick with hugs and he is tuned in to his feelings and the feelings of others (most of the time). He is kind, happy, and quick to smile and laugh with others.
Hair: Owen's hair is still quite blond, though it is a little darker than it was a couple years ago.
Clothes: Owen wears 3T shorts and 4T shirts, though he still has some 18-24 month t-shirts in his rotation that we need to pull out of his closet. He loves his orange bumble bee t-shirt that I bought at Target years ago, but it's time for it to be retired. The next round of pants and shorts I'll buy for him will be 4T, which looked like clown pants on him in the spring, but fit him just right now.
Toileting: Owen wears a pull-up for night time and for home naps. He still has pee accidents during the day sometimes, but he's never been a pee puddler. He typically gets his underwear a little bit wet and then holds the rest in until someone notices that he's wet and makes him go finish in the potty and change his clothes. He still would rather be wet than stop playing to take care of business. He'll get there when he's ready... in the meantime, we travel with spare shorts and underwear for him. He never has poop accidents (thankfully). Grandma says Owen is taking after Tom.
Songs: Owen loves our favorite bands - The Black Angels and Patty Griffin. He loves "Don't Play with Guns" from the Black Angels in Tom's car and he requests Patty Griffin in my car. On his own, he likes "Hey Ho" and wants to play it on repeat while he sings along.
Books: We recently started reading chapter books out loud to Owen and he's enjoyed "Three Tales of My Father's Dragon" and "The Mouse and the Motorcycle." He also really enjoys non-fiction, especially an old copy of cousin Andrew's "From Head to Toes: How Your Body Works" and all of his "Click" magazines. I love that he loves reading. One night after I stayed up until 1am finishing my book I felt like a total hypocrite telling him we had to stop reading his book at bedtime. I loved that he wanted to keep going.
Hockey: Owen's favorite play activity by far is HOCKEY! Playroom hockey, garage hockey, ice skating lessons, public skate. All of these are first priority play activities. He has been taking ice skating lessons for almost two months now and is improving every week. Saying he is passionate about hockey right now feels like an understatement.
Swimming: Owen has been taking weekly swimming lessons for a year. He can swim about 20 feet and is learning to use his arms with his legs and how to stop for a breath. When we spent a week in Florida in July, Owen wanted to be in the pool every spare minute. He would jump off the edge and swim out to Tom or Grandpa or me over and over and over, tirelessly. We spend so much time near water that we really want him to be a strong swimmer and he's definitely on the right track. At the river, Owen wears a life jacket so he can float and swim independently. He can walk upstream in the shallow water to the underwater log the kids used as an upstream jumping off point. He stands on the log (usually with Claire) and jumps forward and floats and swims by himself downstream. He gets himself to the bank and can do loops with very little grown-up intervention.
Play: When Owen isn't playing hockey or swimming, he really enjoys riding bikes (mostly at Opa and Nana's where it's nice and flat), playing games (Trouble), building with Legos or Duplos, pretend play, and playing with Lily.
Guaranteed laugh: Owen loves to be silly and cracks himself up with his silly words (usually Bo Bo or something similar).
Sleep: Owen is still a champion sleeper. He sleeps 11 hours or so at night and sleeps soundly. He likes to sing and talk to himself at night in bed, but he always settles without help.
Eating: Owen is still a great eater. He eats a wide variety of food and sits for long meals. He is still the s l o w e s t eater we know and we are often all finished before he is. He sometimes sits at the table for over an hour. Daily conversation at our kitchen table: "Owen, are you all done?" "No, I'm still eating!" "Show us you're still eating by taking a bite." Repeat.
TV shows: We still watch very little TV with Owen. He likes "Dinosaur Train" and "Word World," mostly because he hasn't seen a lot of other shows.
Friends: Owen's best friend is still Lily. These two miss each other like crazy when one is out of town and they greet each other with joy and hugs and love when they are reunited. They still play well together and will be in the same pre-K class at school this year (this will be their fourth year together). We are grateful that Owen has such a special friend just two houses down. I hope they stay friends even as their interests diverge in the coming years (ahem, hockey, ahem, Owen seems baffled when Lily comes over and doesn't want to play hockey).
